Russia gives up on failed Mars probe, braces for crash landing next month

Russian space scientists abandoned efforts to save Phobos-Grunt, stranded in Earth orbit since early November. The robotic spacecraft carried some 7.5 tons of fuel and a small amount of radioactive cobalt. The Russian space agency, Roscosmos at that time expected the probe to plunge back to Earth around 9 January.
