Successful Launch of Proton-M/Telstar-14R

20 May 2011

A Proton booster launched Telstar 14R to replace Telstar 14, which suffered a solar array deployment failure after launch in 2004. The new spacecraft, built by Space Systems Loral and also known as Estrela do Sul 2, was to operate at 63 deg west longitude to provide Ku-band communications to the Americas. After launch, one of its two solar arrays failed to deploy, as also occurred with Telstar 14, which will limit its lifetime. The launch contracted by International Launch Services is to be the 65th commercial one for Proton. Roscosmos’ Khrunichev Space Center holds majority in ILS.
